AI Search Optimization for Austin Service Businesses, Starting Now
Google now answers first, and the answer takes the top of the page. Where that answer appears it takes most of the clicks, and it is spreading from research questions toward buying ones. Being the business those answers quote is cheap to work on today and expensive to catch up on later. The traffic coming from AI tools is still small, and we will show you exactly how small.

Start With What Google Says
Google's own help pages for website owners are blunt about this, and almost no agency selling AI search optimization will quote them to you.
Google says the special background code people sell for this is not required. It says it ignores the llms.txt file the industry has been adding. And it says plainly that "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization, the two names the industry has landed on, describe work Google does not treat as separate at all.
That is the company running the search engine telling you answer engine optimization is not a separate job. Anyone charging an Austin business a separate line for it is charging for the label.
The work still matters. AI search optimization just needs selling honestly, and honestly means saying most of it is ordinary SEO done with AI answers in mind.
| Sold as AI search work | Google's documentation |

| Schema markup for AI | Not required |
| An llms.txt file | Ignored |
| Content chopped into tiny pieces | Not required |
| AEO and GEO as their own discipline | Still SEO |
How Much of the Page AI Already Takes
A lot of it, on a growing share of searches. Where an AI answer appears it takes the clicks, and the searches it reaches are moving closer to the ones that book work.
You have seen the answer Google now writes at the top of the results page. Google calls it an AI Overview. Pew Research Center watched 68,879 real Google searches by 900 American adults in 2025. When an AI Overview appeared, people clicked through to a website on 8 percent of visits. When there was none, 15 percent. Only 1 in 100 clicked a link inside the AI Overview itself. So it roughly halves the clicks on the searches where it shows up.
The part that matters is which searches get one. Seer Interactive tracked 49,358 searches through February 2026. AI Overviews showed up on 77 percent of "near me" searches, the browsing kind. They showed up on only 8 percent of searches where someone was comparing companies, and 5 percent where someone was ready to buy.

In your terms: AI answers already own the research half of search, where your next customer starts looking. The searches where someone is ready to call are still mostly intact, and that gap is the window. Getting quoted while it is open costs a fraction of what catching up will.
Where AI Sends Local Customers
To your own website, mostly. Steady Demand looked at 14,472 sources that AI tools pointed to across 1,487 local service searches in 50 US cities during 2026. Business websites were 60 percent of them. Reddit and forums were 14 percent, general directories 10 percent, and trade sites like Angi and Thumbtack another 10 percent.
That is reassuring. The thing AI points to most for local services is the one you already own. The work is making sure it can be read, trusted and quoted.

The Part Nobody Selling This Mentions
AI recommendations for local businesses change constantly, and you should know that before paying anyone to chase them.
In that same study, asking Gemini the exact same question twice produced the same sources only about four times in ten. Google's map results produced the same ones nine times in ten. Gemini named the same top business on repeat asks about 7 percent of the time. Google managed 90 percent. And when you compare Gemini against ChatGPT, they agree on which websites to point to just 8 percent of the time.
How often a business got mentioned had almost no relationship to its star rating. Good reviews are worth having for every other reason. They do not appear to buy you AI mentions.
You cannot hold a position in something that gives a different answer nine times out of ten. Anyone promising you a spot in ChatGPT is selling a number that does not exist yet. What you can do is make yourself worth quoting, consistently, and let the mentions build up.

What Actually Moves AI Visibility
We sort this by how much evidence there actually is, because most of what gets sold as AI search optimization has none.
| What people sell you | What the evidence says | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Getting onto page one of normal Google | 76% of the sources in AI Overviews are already ranking on page one (Ahrefs) | Do this first |
| Making sure your site can be read | Google says a page has to be in its index to appear in AI answers at all | Non-negotiable |
| Answering the question in the first line, with real numbers and sources | A university study found this lifted mentions by 30 to 41 percent (Princeton and IIT-Delhi, 2024) | The strongest thing you can do to your pages |
| Filling out your Google Business Profile properly | Google names it as the thing that drives local visibility in AI answers | Do this, and it pays twice |
| Getting mentioned on other websites | Businesses that are mentioned more do appear more, though nobody has proved one causes the other | Worth doing, oversold |
| Adding special code to your pages for AI | A test on 1,885 pages found no improvement, and AI Overview mentions fell slightly (Ahrefs) | Worth having for other reasons, not this one |
| Adding an llms.txt file | Google says it ignores it | Harmless, does nothing |
| Getting more reviews to win AI mentions | Almost no relationship between star rating and mentions (Steady Demand) | Reviews matter, just not for this |
The detail behind that table. Page one comes first. Ahrefs found 76 percent of the sources quoted in AI Overviews were already ranking on page one of normal Google, which makes AI search optimization a result of good SEO rather than something separate from it. Your site being readable by search engines is not optional. Answering the question in the first line has real evidence behind it: the university study that coined the term GEO found adding quotes lifted mentions 41 percent, adding statistics 40 percent, and citing your sources 30 percent, while cramming in keywords did 10 percent worse than doing nothing at all. And your Google Business Profile is the thing Google itself names for local visibility in AI answers.
Weak or contradicted. The special background code sold for this has a failed test behind it. Ahrefs tried it on 1,885 pages and AI Overview mentions went slightly down, not up. That code is worth having for other reasons. It is not what gets you into AI answers, and an agency leading with it is selling you a coincidence. The llms.txt file is ignored by Google, by Google's own statement. Advice on how long a page should be contradicts itself across every source we read. And more reviews do not appear to buy mentions, though reviews still decide whether someone rings you.
Sold as method, with no evidence attached. Branded frameworks, visibility scores and prompt-testing tools are packaging. Not one of the pages we read showed their method beating plain good SEO and a well-run Google Business Profile.
What We Actually Do
Five things, and every one shows up on your ninety-day plan.
Making your site readable
Checking that AI tools can actually read your site, that nothing is accidentally blocking them, and that pages built with modern web code still show their content to systems that cannot run it.
Rewriting your pages to answer first
Rewriting your service pages so every section answers its own heading in the first line, with real numbers and named sources. This has the strongest evidence behind it of anything on the list, and it makes the page better for human readers at the same time.
Your Google Business Profile
The same listing work that drives the Austin map results drives local AI answers, which is why we do not sell generative engine optimization as a separate product.
Getting mentioned elsewhere
Getting you into the "best of" roundups, local directories and forum threads that AI tools pull from. Businesses mentioned in more places do show up more often, though nobody has proved one causes the other.
Checking where you come up
Checking whether you come up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity, reported with the wobble described above stated openly rather than smoothed into a chart that pretends it is a ranking.
What Does AI Search Optimization Cost?
It should not be a separate invoice, and here it is not. AI search optimization sits inside our Austin SEO and local SEO work at no extra charge, because Google is right that it is the same job.
For context, one national agency publishes AI search packages from $3,000 to over $68,000 a month. Another puts general agency fees at $1,500 to $5,000. If someone quotes you a separate AI search charge on top of an SEO fee, ask exactly what is being done that the SEO work does not already cover.

When to Ignore This Entirely
If your Google Business Profile is unclaimed or wrong, fix that first. It is the single biggest thing affecting both local search and local AI answers, and it costs nothing.
If you are not on page one for your main services yet, AI search optimization is early. Three quarters of what appears in AI Overviews is already ranking there. The work to get an Austin business onto page one is the same work that makes it worth quoting.
If someone is selling you AI visibility while your phone goes unanswered, the problem is not AI.
And if your customers search in a hurry, "burst pipe," "wasp nest," "roof leak," the Seer data says AI Overviews barely appear on those searches anyway. Put the attention into the map results and ads instead. We will tell you that rather than sell you this.
How We Start
A free check of where you stand. We test whether AI tools can read your site, run your main service searches through the major AI assistants, and record what they say and who they point to. In writing, whether or not you hire us.
The math. What a single enquiry is worth to you, so any AI search optimization gets judged against the same bar as everything else.
Ninety-day plan. What gets done, who does it, when, and the numbers it will be judged on.
Build. Making the site readable first, then rewriting the pages, then getting mentioned elsewhere.
Report. How often you come up across the AI tools, stated with how much it moves around, alongside the enquiries and booked jobs that actually pay you.
AI Search Optimization Questions We Get
What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?
Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization are industry names for making your pages worth quoting in AI answers. Google's own documentation says this is still just SEO, and that no special code or file is needed. The work overlaps almost entirely with good SEO, which is why AI search optimization is not billed separately here.
How do I get my local business to show up in ChatGPT?
Get onto page one of normal Google first, since roughly three quarters of what appears in AI Overviews is already ranking there. Make sure nothing on your site is blocking AI tools from reading it. Rewrite your service pages so each section answers its heading in the first line, with real detail. Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile. Get listed in the local directories and roundups the AI tools pull from.
Does AI search actually bring me customers?
Not many yet, and the direction is what matters. Fewer than one in a hundred website visits currently come from AI tools, and for service businesses AI points to anyone at all on under four percent of searches. Both are climbing, AI answers already take the top of the page on research searches, and the businesses those answers quote are the ones already ranking and already easy to read.
Is my traffic about to collapse?
Not the traffic that books work. Pew found clicks roughly halve on searches where an AI Overview appears, but Seer found AI Overviews on only 8 percent of comparison searches and 5 percent of ready-to-buy searches, against 77 percent of browsing searches. The people just looking around are the ones AI is intercepting. The people about to ring you mostly are not.
Should I add schema markup for AI?
Add it for other reasons, not for AI. Ahrefs tested it on 1,885 pages and found no improvement, with AI Overview mentions falling slightly. Google states this code is not required for AI search. It is worth having for how your listings look in normal search results. It is not what gets you into AI answers.
What about llms.txt?
Google says it ignores the file. There is no solid evidence it affects anything on any major AI tool. We will add one if you want it, and we will not charge you for it or claim it does something.
Can you guarantee I will appear in AI answers?
No, and nobody can. Asking Gemini the same question twice returns the same top business about 7 percent of the time, against about 90 percent for Google's map results. The honest goal is being worth quoting often, not holding a position.
Can I do this in-house?
The most valuable parts, yes. Claim your Google Business Profile and fill it out properly, then rewrite your main service pages so each section answers its heading in the first sentence. That is most of the benefit available, and it costs you time rather than money.
Find Out What AI Actually Says About Your Business
We will run your main Austin service searches through the major AI tools, record what they say and who they point to, and tell you plainly whether AI search optimization is worth your money right now. Sometimes the answer is no. You get it in writing either way, at no cost.
